Exploring the Skies: A Review of Etihad Airways

By Uche Nnaji

When I first heard about Etihad Airways, I was intrigued. You see, in Nigeria, we often talk about airlines like they’re the talk of the town. With a reputation for quality service and the allure of flying to places like Abu Dhabi, it was a no-brainer for me to try them out. So, I packed my bags, strapped on my travel shoes, and set off for my journey with high hopes. Here’s my honest take on flying with Etihad Airways.

The Booking Process

Let me start with the booking process, which was surprisingly straightforward. I hopped onto their website, and it felt like a breeze. It’s not every day you find an airline’s site that’s user-friendly. Just a few clicks, and I was done. However, I must admit that the prices can be a bit on the high side. For a regular Nigerian, with the economy doing its thing, you’ll want to consider your options. But hey, sometimes you’ve got to splurge a little, right?

Check-In Experience

Now, the real test came at the airport. I arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport feeling all sorts of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and a bit of anxiety. The check-in process with Etihad was generally smooth, but I encountered a minor hiccup. The queue was longer than I expected, and I could feel the impatience in the air. You know how we Nigerians can be when we’re waiting—tapping our feet and making small talk.

However, the staff were professional and polite, which helped ease the frustration. Just make sure you arrive early; Nigerian time can be unpredictable, and you don’t want to miss your flight.

Onboard Experience

As I boarded the aircraft, I was hit with a wave of excitement. The cabin looked sleek, and the seats were comfy. I found my spot and settled in, ready for the journey ahead. The first thing that struck me was the legroom. As someone who’s taller than average, legroom is like gold to me. I had enough space to stretch out without feeling cramped.

The entertainment system was impressive. I scrolled through the options and was thrilled to see a mix of popular movies, TV shows, and even some Nigerian films. I mean, who doesn’t want to watch a good Nollywood flick while flying? The entertainment kept me busy, and before I knew it, we were in the air.

In-Flight Service

Now, let’s talk about the in-flight service. I was pleasantly surprised by the crew. They were friendly, attentive, and genuinely seemed to care about making our flight enjoyable. I ordered the chicken dish (I’m a sucker for good food) and was eager to see what they had to offer. The presentation was lovely, and I dug in with enthusiasm.

The food was decent, but let’s be honest—I’m a Nigerian, and my taste buds are used to some serious spice. The chicken was flavorful, but I found myself wishing for a little more pepper. You know how we like it hot! But overall, it was a satisfying meal that filled my belly.

I did notice, however, that there were moments when the service lagged a bit. After the meal, I was waiting for my drink for what felt like ages. I had to wave down a flight attendant, and while they were apologetic, it felt a bit disorganized. But hey, these things happen, and it didn’t ruin my overall experience.

Comfort and Cleanliness

Comfort-wise, I can’t complain. The cabin was clean, and I appreciated the crew’s efforts to maintain a hygienic environment. With everything that’s been happening around the world, it’s nice to see airlines taking cleanliness seriously. It gave me peace of mind, and I felt comfortable taking off my shoes and relaxing.

The temperature in the cabin was just right—not too hot, not too cold. As we cruised through the skies, I found myself drifting in and out of sleep, which is always a good sign of comfort.

Arrival Experience

Touching down in Abu Dhabi was a moment of excitement. The airport itself is massive, and it felt more like a city than an airport. The immigration process was relatively quick, which was a breath of fresh air. I’ve had my share of long waits in immigration lines, so I was grateful for the efficiency.

Once I cleared immigration, I was off to explore. The airport staff were helpful, and I appreciated the signs in both Arabic and English. It made navigating the airport so much easier.

Overall Impressions

So, what’s the final verdict on Etihad Airways? Overall, I’d say they offer a solid flying experience with a few bumps along the way. The crew is friendly, the cabin is comfortable, and the entertainment options are commendable. However, there’s room for improvement, especially in the consistency of service.

If you’re considering flying with Etihad, I’d say go for it, but be prepared for the occasional hiccup. Sometimes, the journey is just as important as the destination, and I appreciated the effort they put into making the flight enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

Flying is an experience that often sticks with you, and my time with Etihad was no different. While it wasn’t perfect, it was certainly memorable. I left feeling satisfied and ready to explore Abu Dhabi.

So, if you’re planning your next trip, consider giving Etihad Airways a shot. Just keep your expectations in check, and you might find yourself pleasantly surprised.
