Is Union Bank of Nigeria Worth It? A Critical Review

By Damilola Odeyemi

When you talk about banking in Nigeria, Union Bank is one name that pops up. It's been around since 1917, and trust me, that’s a legacy not many banks can boast. Since I have used their services over the years, I feel it's time to share my experiences, both the good and the bad. Let’s get into it.

Customer Service

First off, customer service. This aspect of Union Bank has had its ups and downs. Walking into a branch, you might be greeted with warmth and a smile, or you might find yourself waiting for ages while staff members seem more interested in their phones than in helping you. It’s a real mixed experience. Sometimes, you meet staff who seem genuinely committed to their jobs, working tirelessly to resolve your issues. Other times, it feels like they’re doing you a favor by even acknowledging your presence.

I remember one time I had a transaction issue that needed urgent attention. I went to the nearest branch, ready to pull my hair out in frustration. But to my surprise, a young lady attended to me with such patience and care. She listened to my complaints, typed away, and resolved the issue in less than thirty minutes. I walked out feeling like a king. But then there are those days when the queue is long enough to make you question your life choices. It’s like a game of musical chairs, but nobody is winning.

Digital Banking

Now, let’s talk about Union Bank’s digital banking platform. Honestly, they’ve made strides in this area. Their app is user-friendly, and for someone like me, who prefers to do everything from the comfort of my couch, it’s a lifesaver. You can transfer money, pay bills, and even recharge your phone without breaking a sweat.

However, there are days when the app decides to misbehave. I’ll be sitting there, trying to send money, and the app just freezes. It feels like a betrayal. You’d think by now, they would have ironed out these kinks. But when it works, it really works, and that’s what keeps me coming back.

Products and Services

Union Bank offers a range of products and services, from personal loans to savings accounts. They have this "UnionGoal" account that helps you save towards specific goals. It’s a neat idea, especially for folks like me who can easily get sidetracked when it comes to saving. But then again, I’ve heard stories from friends who applied for loans and faced endless bureaucratic hurdles. It’s like they want you to jump through hoops before they hand over your hard-earned cash.

The interest rates on loans can also be a turn-off. When you’re trying to make your hustle work, the last thing you need is a bank that’s charging you an arm and a leg. It makes you wonder if they’re really in tune with the struggles of everyday Nigerians.

Fees and Charges: A Bit Too Much?

Let’s not even start on the fees and charges. From ATM withdrawal fees to monthly maintenance charges, it feels like they’re always finding new ways to charge you. I’ve had moments where I check my account balance and wonder if my money has grown legs and walked away. There’s this feeling of being nickel-and-dimed, and it can be incredibly frustrating.

In my opinion, banks should strive to make banking affordable, especially for the average Nigerian. I get that they need to make profits, but sometimes it feels like they’re taking advantage of their customers. It's a delicate balance they need to strike.

Community Engagement: Not Enough

One thing I’ve noticed is that Union Bank’s community engagement could be better. I mean, they sponsor events and have initiatives, but it feels somewhat disconnected from the realities of the people they serve. They could do more to support local businesses or invest in community-driven projects.

There’s this saying that “charity begins at home,” and if they truly want to connect with the people, they should look closer to home. Many banks are doing great things in their communities, and it would be nice to see Union Bank stepping up their game in this regard.

In wrapping this up, Union Bank of Nigeria has its strengths and weaknesses. I’ve had some great experiences and some that made me question my loyalty. They’ve made significant strides in digital banking, and the customer service can shine when you find the right staff, but there are definitely areas that need improvement.

If you’re considering opening an account with them or exploring their services, go in with your eyes wide open. You might find the convenience you’re looking for, but be prepared for the occasional hiccup.

So, what do you think? Have you had your own experiences with Union Bank? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
