Exploring Emirates Airline: A Traveler's Review

By Juma Otieno

When the time came for me to book a flight from Nairobi to Dubai, the name Emirates kept popping up. Friends and family couldn’t stop raving about it. “It’s the best airline,” they said, with that twinkle in their eyes that said they’d had a fantastic experience. But, as a Kenyan, I’ve learned to be a bit cautious about hype. So, I decided to give Emirates a shot, hoping it would live up to the reputation. Spoiler alert: it mostly did, but there were a few surprises along the way.

Booking and Check-In

Let’s start right from the beginning: the booking process. I was pleasantly surprised by how straightforward it was. The Emirates website is user-friendly, and I found myself quickly navigating through the options. I appreciated that I could choose my seat and even select my meal in advance. In this day and age, that’s a small but thoughtful touch that makes you feel valued as a customer.

When I arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, I was a bit nervous, to be honest. Airports can be chaotic, and I was ready for the usual long lines and confusion. However, the Emirates check-in area felt organized. The staff greeted me with warm smiles, and before I knew it, I was through and ready to board. It was a relief; no drama here, just smooth sailing.

The Cabin Experience

Once on the plane, I was hit by a wave of comfort. I had heard that Emirates invests in their aircraft, and it showed. The seats were spacious, and I had enough legroom to stretch out—something I always appreciate, especially on long flights. I settled in, and as I looked around, I could see that the cabin was well-maintained and had a calming ambiance.

As the plane took off, I was excited to check out the inflight entertainment. Let me tell you, it did not disappoint! There were countless movies, TV shows, and even documentaries. I found myself engrossed in a local Kenyan film, which felt like a slice of home, even at 38,000 feet. That’s the beauty of flying with an airline that caters to diverse tastes.

Service with a Smile

Now, let’s talk about the crew. The cabin staff were genuinely friendly and attentive. Throughout the flight, they made sure we were comfortable, checking in periodically to see if we needed anything. I remember one moment when I was struggling to adjust my seat, and a flight attendant swooped in to help me out. It’s those little acts of kindness that make a big difference.

However, there was one incident that caught me off guard. In the middle of the flight, I noticed that the crew seemed a bit overwhelmed during meal service. It took longer than expected for them to serve us, and I could see some passengers getting restless. I get it—flying can be hectic, but it felt like they could have managed that situation better.

The Food Experience

Ah, the food! Now, this is always a hot topic for travelers. I opted for the Kenyan meal option, naturally. I mean, who wouldn’t want to taste a bit of home while flying? The meal came with some rice, beef stew, and a side of vegetables. Honestly, it was quite decent. The flavors were good, and I appreciated the effort they put into representing different cuisines.

However, I couldn’t help but feel a bit let down by the portion sizes. I understand that airlines have to manage costs, but for a long-haul flight, I expected a bit more. A few more bites wouldn’t hurt, right? The dessert was a delightful surprise, though. A rich chocolate mousse that made me forget about the size of the main meal for a moment.

Layover in Dubai

Now, let’s talk about the layover in Dubai. I’d heard so much about Dubai International Airport, and it lived up to its reputation. It’s massive, with plenty of shops, restaurants, and lounges. I had about three hours to spare, which felt just right. I took some time to explore, grab a quick coffee, and even treated myself to some duty-free shopping.

But here’s the kicker: the airport can be a bit overwhelming. With so many people rushing about, it’s easy to lose track of time and gate information. I had to keep glancing at the monitors to ensure I wasn’t missing my connecting flight. So, while it’s a great stopover, just keep an eye on your schedule.

The Return Journey

Fast forward to my return journey. I was curious to see if Emirates would maintain the same level of service. To my relief, they did. The cabin crew was just as friendly, and the comfort of the seats was consistent. However, I noticed that the inflight entertainment didn’t seem as updated on the return leg. A few of the movies I had wanted to watch were no longer available. It didn’t ruin my experience, but it left me wanting more.

The food on the way back was another story. I tried the international option this time, and while it was fine, it lacked the authenticity I had enjoyed on the outbound flight. The flavors were a bit bland, and it felt like they were playing it safe. I missed that Kenyan flair that had made my first meal so enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

So, what’s the final verdict on Emirates Airline? Overall, I’d say they have a solid reputation for a reason. The comfort, entertainment, and friendly service made for a mostly enjoyable experience. However, there were a few bumps in the road, particularly during meal service and the inconsistency in food quality on the return flight.

In a nutshell, if you’re flying from Kenya to Dubai or beyond, Emirates is a solid choice, especially for those who value comfort and good service. Just keep your expectations in check regarding meal sizes and variety.

If you’re planning your next trip, I’d say give Emirates a chance. You might find that the experience exceeds your expectations. But hey, have you flown with Emirates before? What was your experience like? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
